Brian Watkins the Extreme Entrepreneur

1st Financial Knowledge Progress Post!

Even though I decided to skip college years ago, I never decided to skip out on education. In fact, one of my primary reasons for skipping college was that I believed that I could learn better & learn more outside of a traditional university, and so I have. I can confidently say that I’m at least more developed as an entrepreneur or business executive than an MBA. However, I need to hit the books again and go back to school. No, not traditional school, rather my own personal program. I believe that acquiring more technical financial knowledge will be very beneficial to the career in business that I am forging. So, I have decided to really dedicate myself to this pursuit, beginning today, on May 1st, 2010, and I have decided to give you a first row seat into my pursuit of technical financial knowledge here in this new Financial Knowledge Progress section.

Financial Subjects I Will Be Studying

Here is a quick listing of some of the subjects that I will likely be studying throughout the future along with this initiative of mine…

- Accounting: The recording & reporting of financial transactions and financial events, including bookkeeping, information systems, financial accounting, management accounting, cost accounting, & fund accounting.

- Corporate Finance: The financial management & funding of companies & assets, including capital management, risk management, fundamental analysis, asset valuation, corporate credit, behavioral finance, mergers & acquisitions, financial markets, private equity, & public offerings.

- Tax: Tax policy & procedure, including income tax, corporate tax, payroll tax, capital gains tax, financial transaction tax, sales tax, etc.

- Business Law: Laws governing the existence & functions of business, including corporate law, companies law, commercial law, employment law, contracts, & bankruptcy.

- Securities Law: Laws & regulations governing financial stakes in companies & certain assets, including private placements, public equity, debt instruments, & certain derivatives.

Why I’m Pursuing This Knowledge

I’ve already previously built some knowledge within all of these subjects. I have enough to be effective within small business ventures & investment deals, and within dealing with technical advisers. However, I’m soon taking my career to new heights with more complex & likely bigger business ventures & investment deals.

I personally need a more solid base of professional grade, technical financial knowledge in order to better put the odds in favor of my success. Sure, I could solely leave this stuff up to professional advisers, but in business, and especially in professional investments, I think it is a big advantage as an entrepreneur to also personally have this expertise when building & executing. I’m not one to mess around with my goals in life, so if going through an extended period of boring & painful technical study of financial knowledge will increase the certainty of my massive business achievement, then bring it on!

It helps that I won’t be studying for grades in a traditional school, but rather directly for the performance of my own wealth building. It also helps that I already have a pretty solid financial knowledgebase and that I kinda get off on this stuff too. ;-)

Tracking My Progress

Along with my initiative to personally acquire technical financial knowledge, I am going to publicly track my progress here on my personal website in this new Financial Knowledge Progress section. So, you will now have a front row seat to follow this pursuit of mine on a regular basis.

I don’t have any set schedule for updating my progress here. Rather, I am going to go based on feel and when I learn something meaningful that I would like to share. If you enjoy technical financial matters that affect the management & performance of a business & investment assets, then you may enjoy following my progress. Feel free to subscribe for updates to my progress and engage me throughout this pursuit.

Starting with Accounting

I am going to start off by studying accounting in detail. I was tempted to study finance first, since I believe that finance will be the most impactful financial knowledge I pursue here. However, I strategically decided to first build up my mental momentum by studying accounting and have an even better underlying base of related knowledge to go into finance with, so that I can optimize my learning here. So bean counting, I mean, accounting it is! ;-)

*****

I’m ready to crunch numbers, policy, & theory day after day in order to improve myself and gain a serious edge in my upcoming complex business ventures & investment deals. I know this work will payoff in spades and I will look back on this as a critical & wise advancement of myself. There is a lot of opportunity tied to this knowledge in life, so feel free to join me in increasing your financial knowledge. I’d love to hear your thoughts along the way too.

This pursuit starts now! :D
